Mission

To identify and facilitate the development of an inventory of affordable housing types, accessible to public transportation, to meet the immediate and long term needs of our Friends.

Housing Types:

Supportive Housing Program: Mixed studio (SRO), One Bedroom w/ Kitchen,
and Bath. Units from 300 s.f. to 475 s.f. Social Services located on ground
floor. Permanent housing, with onsite case managers and volunteer services.
Residents will be screened and selected from populations struggling with
physical and mental illness, substance abuse, and limited education. Residents
can stay as long as they follow the rules.
Mixed multi-family: conventional w/ section 8 subsidized units included.
Available as the next step up to independent living, without the stigma of
      "public housing" attached to residents.
Oxford House: Temporary rental housing for single-gender recovering drug
and alcohol addicts: Self governed, self managed communal housing with
tenants responsible for: maintaining a clean and sober life, making timely rent
payments, including expenses, and holding full-time employment. The rational is
that responsible and purposeful lives can be built through self-esteem gained
by experiencing the joy and rewards of successful living. This is a tested model
with an excellent record of success over an extended period. (oxfordhouse.com)

Gatlinburg has a unique set of problems associated with the development of multi-family housing unless aimed at the tourism market. Being the gateway  city to the Great Smoky Mountains National park, by far the most visited national park in the system, results in inflated land prices targeted for the resort industry with no regard for housing the service worker population. An excellent white paper has been recently written entitled, "A Hotel is not a Home," by Ms. Corrie Gladstein. Her thesis details the numerous obstacles as relates to developing appropriate affordable housing for Gatlinburg. A copy of her report is available from the web site of FIN. (weareFIN.org)
